Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a severe conflict, marking a stark contrast to the optimism that followed the 2019 revolution. The revolution had promised change after years of political instability, economic hardship, and underdevelopment. The recent conflict has left 11 million displaced within Sudan while another 2 million people have fled to neighboring countries. The violence has led to a humanitarian crisis that has had a devastating impact on women and girls. Yet their stories of leadership, innovation, and organizing are seldom heard.

This is a collection of stories from women in the grip of the devastating Sudan conflict. Read the experiences of these diverse voices—mothers, grandmothers, nurses, teachers, students, and community workers—who all share the burden of care and responsibility in Sudan and in neighboring countries.

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has attacked a famine-hit camp for displaced people in Darfur, killing at least 40 civilians, according to first responders.
